In a welcome move, some corporate Australian media is openly questioning the imminent military trial of David Hicks, one of the first four detainees to appear before U.S. military tribunal, after being illegally held at Guantanamo Bay for over 2 years without charge and allegedly tortured.

In a welcome move, some corporate Australian media is openly questioning the imminent military trial of David Hicks, one of the first four detainees to appear before U.S. military tribunal, after being illegally held at Guantanamo Bay for over 2 years without charge and allegedly tortured.

Such trials have been condemned by Human rights observers, and civilian and military defence lawyers of the accused.

Noted in the reports is that the U.K. has refused to have their citizens tried as the English establishment also deems the trials unfair, yet the Howard government is fulfilling it’s compliant colonial servitude to the U.S. by allowing Hicks to be tried with little government representation or commentary on the detention and trial process.

At best there is the spurious argument that there is nothing that Hicks could be tried with. This masks Australia’s international legal obligations – Hicks should have been turned over to the international criminal court as a mercenary.
