Louisiana Wetlands Conservation

I visited New Orleans in 2003 for Mardi-gras, and just recently was sent pictures of some of the destruction of my friends houses there from Hurricane Katrina. I’ve been following (quietly admittedly, I’m exhibiting Blogger Burnout due to “real” workload) the fall-out from the disaster.

A worthwhile interview to read on the loss of wetlands (bayou) which contributed to the disaster is at the Mother Jones magazine website. In particular, there are very good suggestions for remedial strategies. At least one fairly straightforward strategy involves introducing controlled release of the Mississippi through sluice-gates into wetlands areas, which carries sediment to replenish the marshlands.

Democracy Now! as usual has been doing an excellent job covering many of the forgotten victims of Katrina – the prisoners left abandoned, undocumented workers fearing deportation – and the profiteering by the mercenaries from the Blackwater security company and other corporations.
