Now the intention of the partial birth abortion bill becomes clear.

Yesterday, U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft’s Justice department began an attempt to subpoena medical records of patients that may have received an abortion that could be deemed partial-birth.

Naturally he can accurately claim that the Justice Dept will not seek individual names and details of patients. The real aim is to intimidate doctors performing all abortions, while providing an imagined threat to patients, which will be the focus of the debate. He has then started to swat down the issue of disclosure of patients identity, thereby drawing the debate away from the persecution of doctors.

The partial birth abortion bill was deliberately framed loosely, such that each abortion performed can be scrutinised and deliberated at length as to whether it falls inside or outside of the law. By causing each doctor to have to defend each operation as to it’s conformance to the bill, the intention is to raise the litigation costs and (helpfully to the anti-abortion terrorists) publicly disclose each doctor.

So it’s a two-pronged assault of stigmatisation and economic punishment designed to drive doctors out of abortion practice. This is driven by a man who forces department of justice workers to hold prayer meetings and sing his own patriotic songs, orders coverage of a partially naked classical statue, deems democracy against the will of Christianity, and on his own admission (his memoirs “Lessons from a Father to His Son”) had himself anointed with Crisco oil (by US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas!) in imitation of the biblical description of the preparation of ancient priests, on his appointment to Attorney General!
