After Aristede was finally allowed a press conference, Democracy Now! has in-depth interviews and analysis of Aristedes claims of kidnapping.

In particular, Kim Ives who spoke with Aristede in the C.A.R in creole, reveals that the U.S. mercenaries forming Aristedes bodyguard, the Steele Foundation, were dismissed by the U.S. forces and embassy staff on the Saturday afternoon prior to his departure Sunday morning. This left Aristede defenceless against armed guerrillas lead by Guy Phillippe and L.J. Chamblain. The threat was then made by the U.S. consul that unless Aristede left the country he would be allowed to be killed as would his supporters, since no support would given by the U.S. government. The choice was then given that he sign the abdication statement in exchange for an aeroplane out of Haiti.

An extremely subtle but nonetheless illegal deposing of a sovereign leader undisputedly democratically elected by the Haitian people.
