I had the opportunity to accompany The Missile Dick Chicks to protest the continuing occupation of Iraq by U.S. forces in Washington D.C. Organised by A.N.S.W.E.R, this consisted of speeches, followed by a march to Donald Rumsfelds house to draw attention to actions of the Secretary of Defence in illegally diverting Afghan war funds to plan for Iraq invasion (according to Bob Woodward’s revelations), creating circumstances that have endangered servicemen’s lives (inadequate provision of troops and particularly inadequate provision of armoured vehicles and body armour), and creating an environment to allow the torture of prisoners of U.S. military prisons.
Media coverage was overshadowed by the long expected death of Ronald Reagan, the president responsible for the only country to be tried and found guilty of sponsoring terrorism (supporting Nicaraguan contras against the Nicaraguan population), of taking Iraq off the U.S. list of terrorist states and providing political and military support of the Hussein regime in invading Iran and then attempting to initially pin the gassing of the Kurds at Halabja on the Iranians, after allowing U.S companies to sell gas precursors to Iraq.
However the protest did make al-Jazeera. Unfortunately the Missile Dick Chicks didn’t get photographed but one of their masks makes a timely appearance. This is probably the most important news outlet to pick up the story, since the communication to Arabic nations that there is U.S. popular outrage and protest against the actions of the illegitimate executive branch helps dispel the perception that this is an unanimous war against Arabs. This acts to counteract the rhetoric of terrorist groups like al-Qaeda.
